Nightguards and Sports Guards

When people think of preventive dentistry, regular dental cleanings and exams often come to mind. At West Glades Dental, we take prevention a step further by recommending nightguards and sports guards to our patients whenever necessary. By taking this additional step to protect your teeth, you could avoid damage, trauma, and tooth loss.

Treating TMJ or TMJD (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction)

If you awaken with a headache, jaw pain, sore teeth, or facial pain, you may have a condition called TMJD. Often caused by malocclusion (a misaligned bite), TMJD prevents your jaw joints from functioning properly. Clicking, popping, and locking in the joint can all be indicators of this condition.

By wearing a specially designed oral appliance, or nightguard, we can help your jaw find a comfortable resting position, allowing these muscles to relax and reducing your symptoms.

When left untreated, TMJD often worsens over time, making eating, yawning, and even speaking difficult.

Our custom-designed oral appliances fit your teeth snugly, are easy to get used to, and provide relief within a relatively short period of time. They are non-invasive and may help you avoid surgery in the future.

Nightguards for Nocturnal Bruxism

Clenching and grinding your teeth during the night can make sleeping difficult. Waking up with tired, sore muscles can negatively impact your quality of life. Additionally, clenching and grinding your teeth may damage them, causing cracks, chips, and excessive wear and aging your smile.

Some of the causes of nocturnal bruxism (clenching and grinding) include a misaligned bite, certain medications, lifestyle factors such as stress or anxiety, drug use, alcohol use, and genetics.

A nightguard places a barrier between your upper and lower teeth, protecting them from causing damage due to the extreme force your jaw exerts – especially subconsciously. Our custom nightguards not only provide protection from teeth grinding, but also reduce other symptoms such as headaches, neck aches, and jaw pain.

Protective Sports Guards
for Patients of All Ages

Any time you play a sport, it is important to evaluate if tooth injury is possible. Athletic mouth guards can offer protection during sports such as hockey, soccer, football, baseball, wrestling, soccer, boxing, and lacrosse.

While children and teens are often encouraged to get sports guards to protect their smiles, sometimes their parents forget that if they play sports, they need protection too!

We can make sports guards in nearly any color, from a discreet clear to your team’s colors. Our custom athletic mouth guards fit well and stay put when you need them most.
